Some gardening questions answered at the fair

The Otero County Master Gardener booth was popular at the 2011 Otero County Fair last month. Master Gardeners grew and sold close to 150 plants.

Among the shoppers were Peter and Loretta Sanders of Alamogordo. "She loves to garden," he said, as his wife signed up for information on Master Gardener classes.

"Yes, I enjoy it, but there's so much more I want to learn," she said.

The Sanderses were assisted by Master Gardeners Sandra Fitts and Norman Renfrow, two of the close to 40 Master Gardeners who fielded questions during the fair.

The most common query was, "What's wrong with my tomatoes?" Some questions were taken down to be answered later.

"The climate is the problem, it's been too hot," is the tomato answer, from Master Gardener "Tomato Jim" Money of Alamogordo. "As the weather cools off this month, tomato plants should begin to produce some more."

So don't give up and pull them out for compost yet.

"What is causing blossom end rot in my tomatoes?" was another question for Tomato Jim. "The transpiration rate is greater than the input rate of water. It's too hot, so the plant is losing more water. The fruit of the plant is being aborted because it's not getting enough water to maintain it. It causes a calcium deficiency that causes that leathery spot we call blossom end rot."

Q: What are the best Alamo area trees to grow in our high-desert climate that are not poisonous to animals? When should I plant trees? When should I prune them? And where do you suggest shopping for them?

A: From Master Gardener Ray Ortega of Tularosa, who has more than 600 trees, all on drip irrigation to conserve water. He said trees themselves generally are not poisonous to animals.

"Arizona ash does real well here," he said. "I have a lot of bur oak, because with water it's one of the fastest-growing of the family of oaks. It has beautiful leaves and is a large shade tree for large yards."

Ortega also said he likes the desert willow.
