Model student: Active University of Scranton student appears in magazine ads ...
Julia Frakes was 10 years old when she begged her mother to take her to an exhibit by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.
Just a few years later, Miss Frakes found herself in front of that same photographer's lens.
The 21-year-old has made a name for herself as a model, stylist and fashion writer and blogger, modeling in Vogue and New York Magazine, among many others, and contributing to such publications as Paper magazine and Dossier Journal. And she does it all while studying psychology at the University of Scranton and helping with community endeavors.
Miss Frakes grew up in Clarks Summit and then Luzerne County, the daughter of Jane Leslie Alperin and the late Daniel Frakes. Today, she splits her time between Northeast Pennsylvania and New York City, stacking her college courses on two days each week so she has time to head to New York City when work beckons.
"I really like that because the pace and the people ... and the realness of Scranton is something I really gravitate toward," Miss Frakes said.
She speaks enthusiastically about the cultural renaissance occurring in Scranton, where her family's roots run deep. Her grandfather, the late Irwin E. Alperin, ran apparel manufacturer Alperin Inc. and was prominent in the community and at the University of Scranton. Her mother is an artist who owns the Kingston store Jane Leslie & Co. and sits on the advisory board for the university's Kania School of Management.
Growing up in a manufacturing family gave Miss Frakes what she called "a tactile appreciation for the making of the garment," and she tries to approach fashion from a historical perspective when writing about the subject.
"I think what she brought to fashion was (her love for) history," Ms. Alperin said. "So she always made correlations between what period that reflects, what designer and where he came from and what influences he had."
Miss Frakes was a teenager when Paper magazine brought her on board as a fashion writer. She covered shows around the world, and her writing found its way into other publications as well.
