Secrets for the cutting-flower gardener
-->NORTH KINGSTOWN –– Brilliant colors and the earthy aroma of herbs greet visitors to Polly Hutchison’s arrangement room at Robin Hollow Farm.
She is working on arrangements for one of four farmers’ markets where she and her staff sell flowers. On a counter, dozens of Mason jars wait for a wedding reception where each table will have enough jars filled with flowers for each guest to take. Some shelves nearby hold antique canning jars that will hold flower arrangements for another wedding reception.
Colorful Mason-jar arrangements say summer, and Hutchison’s includes the fragrance of flowers and herbs to smell like summer, too.
This week, she was working with dill and parsley blossoms. On the farm, there were rows of Thai basil with deep burgundy blossoms, spicy mountain mint and other herbs that Hutchison will blend with summer flowers.
She uses only cultivated plants, not wild. However, her gardens contain plants that do grow wild elsewhere. Butterfly weed, for instance, belongs to the same genus as our native milkweed, and Ammi majus is a dead ringer for the wild carrot that New Englanders call Queen Anne’s lace.
When she plans cutting gardens for customers of Robin Hollow Farm, Hutchison advises, “Zinnias will give you the best bang for your buck because they keep coming.” The seeds of many other cutting flowers, such as dill weed, must often be planted in succession, throughout the growing season to provide enough material for arrangements. This week, she and her growers were planting sunflower seeds for arrangements in early autumn.
Hutchison is generous with advice about cutting flowers for long-lasting, informal, flower arrangements:
Cleanliness comes first. “If your water isn’t clean enough for you to drink,” she says, “it’s not clean enough for flowers.” The water in cutting pails and arrangement containers always must be clean.
