Habben barn quilt part of regional art display
Dr. B. Marie (Habben) Brady-Whitcanack of Fort Madison grew up on a farm west of Carthage, one of three daughters of John and Ruby Habben. She has begun painting eight by eight foot wooden quilts which are mounted on local barns.The newest addition to the Regional Barn Quilts is now on the 1867 Habben barn, property of Mary Ann (Habben) Taus and Bernie Taus of Carthage. The Habben Barn Quilt, one of many in the region that were initially painted by Brady-Whitcanack, is on the Habben barn just west of Carthage. Another Brady-Whitcanack Barn Quilt, located on the oldest carriage-barn in the state of Iowa, was the first quilt to be completed for a multi-year community service project that included participation by students from Holy Trinity Catholic Schools in Fort Madison, and, Carl Sandburg College dual credit student and art students at Warsaw. The Warsaw Underground Railroad Quilt, located next to the Warsaw High School, was developed from images said to originate with the Prince Hall Masons during the Civil War. The quilts instructed slaves when and where to escape to free-states. The Brady-Whitcanack Barn Quilt was developed from the ancient "flower of life" and "tree of life" designs for spiritual meditation.
