Think, for a few seconds, of beauty pageant contestants as fairy tale princesses. The enemies of the crown wardrobe malfunctions, junk food, judges, other princesses and the wicked mothers of other princesses are conspicuously plentiful.
But lets not forget the almost imperceptible forces that can trip up a reign. Were talking about walking or, rather, falling. Is there a less graceful and more embarrassing demise for a pageant contestant than a stumble that results in her diving head first to the floor, arms splayed like a baseball player stretching a single into a double?
Bree Boyce, the reigning Miss South Carolina who will compete in the Miss America Pageant this week in Las Vegas, was walking in front of those gathered at her pre-Christmas send-off celebration and wardrobe showing. Strutting at a perfected pace, which is no faster than the time it takes a dollop of honey to slide down the inside of a mug, Boyce looked regal and elegant in her gown. Her periwinkle blues eyes twinkled.
Guests at 701 Whaley intently watched as Boyce navigated the polished concrete floor with the ease of a Swiffer until an enemy emerged. In this case, a crevice.
Boyces toothpick-thin heel stepped into a crack. Her knee buckled, and the guests, in unison, gasped like a horrified talk show audience after a big reveal. Boyce only stumbled, and she quickly regained her balance. Oxygen was mercifully restored to the room.
Her face didnt stiffen with frightened disappointment. Instead, she smiled like she had just finished a joke by skipping the punch line. Boyce isnt like other beauty pageant contestants because, one assumes, she wouldve led the crowd in post-fall laughter once it was assured that she was OK, of course.
I am the same person Ive always been, Boyce, a Florence native, said. I am goofy. I fall. Im normal. Im just like everyone else.
