Mundelein brothers' Chevy Nova is top 'street machine'
When Phil and Jeremy Gerber were hired to build a 1967 Chevy Nova, they set out to build the ultimate street machine.
From the looks of it, they achieved their goal.
The Gerbers, owners of the Roadster Shop in Mundelein, were recently recognized by the Goodguys Rod & Custom Associaton’s 2011 Street Machine of the Year for the rebuilt 1967 Chevy Nova named Innovator.
The car will be on display at the Chicagoland Nationals Hot Rod/Classic Car Festival on Friday through Sunday at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.
The Gerbers’ shop, on Route 83, just north of Route 60, near Ivanhoe. rebuilds classic cars, trucks and hot rods. They were hired by Alex Covington of South Carolina early last year to build the one-of-a-kind Chevy vehicle.
“He just wanted us to build the ultimate Chevy Nova, kind of the coolest one ever built,” said Phil Gerber.
Using an old shell of a Chevy Nova from Iowa, the Gerbers spent more than the next 14 months in rebuilding the vehicle into a mean-looking street machine. Nearly all of the parts on the vehicle are custom-made. It’s powered by a 700-horsepower engine.
Jeremy Gerber, who was the lead designer and fabricator of the vehicle, said the shop tried to maintain the original 1967 Chevy Nova design but incorporate a futuristic theme.
“What we’re really after with this car was to make a futurist concept car that makes a statement,” he said. “We wanted to make a statement with the design that set it apart from the rest of cars.”
The final outcome exceeded their expectations. In July, the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association recognized the car as the 2011 Street Machine of the Year at a car show in Columbus, Ohio.
“I think people liked it because it makes such a bold statement,” said Jeremy Gerber.

Once in awhile, we use Stoker's white primer Nova as a mule for equipment evaluations. All of this is done with a budget mentality, just as David has built his white primer Nova with a 5.3L LS engine, complete with nitrous oxide.
