Cumbrian villagers open their own pub
Villagers in Crosby Ravensworth are celebrating the relaunch of the Butchers Arms in Crosby Ravensworth near Penrith.
The community stepped in after the pub closed a year ago. They decided to set up a co-operative and, after a relatively quick turnaround, bought the pub and renovated it in time for an official reopening.
The campaign was led by a group of determined villagers who encouraged almost 300 people to take a ‘stake’ in the traditional Cumbrian pub eventually gathering the £300,000 needed to resurrect it.
Cameron Smith, treasurer of the Lyvennet Community Pub Ltd, said he was proud of the way the community had pulled together to turn around the fate of the local.
“The pub closed in September 2010,” said Mr Smith. “We talked about buying it as a community but it took five months to get to a point where we could get the support. We set up a co-op in February and made an offer in March.”
He added: “We got the keys on June 8 and that evening there were volunteers in here working on the building."
He added that in the weeks that followed a steady stream of seeding helped to return to the pub to its former glory. Volunteers made gardening, plumbing, masonry, decoration, electrical work and carpentry work involved.
The pub has been redone, revamped beer garden and a full commercial kitchen was set in. The installation of new log burner and impressive oak bar complete the transformation.
Performing the inauguration ceremony and the unveiling of the new-look Butchers Arms on Saturday, was John Stubbs, who traveled from his home in Melbourne, Australia to mark the occasion.
Mr Stubbs grew up in the pub when his mother, Olive, owned it between 1958 and 1978. When he heard about the villagers’ plight he knew he had to help save his former home.
He said: “I heard about what was going on while in Melbourne and I read the prospectus and knew I had to get involved for sentimental reasons.
