South Elgin Riverfest Express comes back
A festival that started off as a Centennial celebration for South Elgin is now in its 15th year.
South Elgin Riverfest Express returns Aug. 19 through 21 at the County Park on North Water Street in South Elgin. The fest is open from 5 p.m. to midnight today, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
“The first one was so successful, everyone kept saying we need to do this again. So we kept doing it again and again and again,” said festival co-chairwoman Joyce Ware.
Highlights include a carnival, craft show and business expo, car show, fireworks and live music.
“Freedom Express traveling museum is going to be here,” she said. “It talks about freedom and our rights in the exhibit. It will be in the annex parking lot from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.”
McCormick Foundation’s Freedom Express is The Freedom Express a 45-foot mobile museum that tells the story of our First Amendment freedoms of speech, religion, petition, press and assembly through artifacts and computer-based interaction.
Also new this year is a Civil War encampment in honor of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.
Battery G – 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, Civil War Artillery reenactment unit, will be in County Park Friday through Sunday morning to educate the public about the Civil War.
“There will be a battle at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. at County Park, and cannon demonstrations several times a day,” Ware said. “People can walk through and see what life during the Civil War was like.”
The Craft Show and Small Business Expo will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There you will find crafts, information on small businesses, antiques and collectibles.
The car show is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. She thinks it will be quite popular as there’s no other car shows in the area, she said, providing the weather is nice.
