Heritage Community Park evolving
RANCHO CUCAMONGA - When Heritage Community Park opened in 1987, it was a big deal to the equestrians of the Alta Loma neighborhood.
The Beryl Street facility has access to horse trails, hitching rails and two arenas for horse shows.
"When they opened this up, it was like heaven," said Pat Morris, founder of Rising Stars of Equestrian Therapy.
But the equestrian community evolved through the years with young horse lovers growing up and leaving the city, replaced by newcomers who weren't all horse owners. The recent recession hasn't helped either with many residents giving up their expensive pet or even their horse property.
Instead of seeing a crowded park, Morris regularly finds residents who haven't heard of it.
But the horse community, with three active organizations at its core - Rising Stars, Alta Loma Riding Club and Rancho Cucamonga Equestrian Patrol - is hoping to inject new life to a neighborhood that still holds the horse in very high esteem.
Anchoring the riding community is the beloved park, which hosted An Evening of the Horse last week to showcase the achievements of area riders.
The event kicked off with the Equestrian Patrol color guard riding alongside Maegan Ridley, an Alta Loma Riding Club member who was crowned Miss Rodeo USA two years ago. The riding club showed off more than a dozen different breeds of horse and recently hosted a playday with a strong turnout.
With 25 volunteers, the Equestrian Patrol is a San Bernardino County Sheriff's program that monitors the trails in the city limits.
"We're the eyes and ears for the sheriff's," said Jim Jackson, squad leader of the Equestrian Patrol. "With the sheriff's department so short-staffed due to budget cuts, we fill in with what they can't do."
The patrol, unarmed and on horseback, might give citations to motorbike riders who illegally traverse the riding trails or to trespassers in the Cucamonga Canyon.
