Vertigo: A Spinning Sensation
Do you frequently experience nausea and vomiting or feel like everything around you is moving around in circles? Occasional feelings of dizziness, most especially after a tiresome and strenuous activity may be considered a normal occurrence but if it happens more frequently, this may not be a normal occurrence. If this carousel-like feeling has been bugging you—have yourself checked as this may be a case of vertigo.
What Is Vertigo?
Vertigo is defined as classification of dizziness that happens when he or she shifts from a normal environment into another one. People get used to their usual environment and when this relationship to the environment breaks, he or she experiences like the space is spinning around him. Many people make use of vertigo and dizziness interchangeably but they are two different things. While all forms of vertigo is dizziness, not all types of dizziness is due to vertigo… only that DIZZINESS is the landmark symptom of vertigo.
Causes of Vertigo
Vertigo has something to do with our sense of balance and it is true that our ears or the vestibular structures in our ears have a great bearing with our balancing skills. Certain causes of vertigo are associated with this fact such as Meniere’s Disease, Acoustic Neuroma, Labyrinthitis, Migraine, Multiple Sclerosis, Trauma, and other conditions which impairs the vestibular areas.
Vertigo Symptoms
- Nausea and Vomiting . Nausea and vomiting are common vertigo symptoms due to motion sickness and disorientation. Nausea is a response of the body due to the change in one’s environment and a disruption in the equilibrium of the body. Vomiting is a common result of vertigo symptoms, more specifically resulting from nausea.
- Sweating or Diaphoresis . Sweating results from the response of the parasympathetic nervous system. This can be accompanied with increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased respiration. Most of the time, a person will also have cold, clammy extremities.
