The Straits, The Sound Of Dire Straits, York Barbican, October 7

MEET The Straits, alias Dire Straits without band leader Mark Knopfler.

His former band members, Alan Clark, Phil Palmer and Chris White, have formed a new group with African singer-guitarist Terence Reis, who apparently “sounds very similar” to Knopfler, as you can judge for yourself at York Barbican this autumn.

The Straits will play York on Friday, October 7, as part of a ten-date tour entitled The Sound Of Dire Straits, 20 years on from the release of the original band’s last studio album, On Every Street.

“Due to public demand of Dire Straits fans who wanted to see the band tour again and perform all their classic hits and songs, original Dire Straits keyboardist Alan Clark has put together a new version of the band called The Straits,” says tour publicist Peter Noble.

Earlier this year, Clark recruited Reis to fill Knopfler’s shoes after he and his wife discovered the singer/guitarist from Maputo, Mozambique via a video on YouTube. Reis grew up playing the guitar in the manner of the local finger-picking street musicians, an idiosyncratic style that chimes with Knopfler’s distinctive sound.

An honours graduate at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Dramatic Arts in Johannesburg, Reis is also an award-winning actor and has starred in several films while continuing a parallel career as a musician.

New front man in place, The Straits performed their debut concert to 4,000 fans at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in May and followed up with a storming set in front of a 14,000 crowd at the Cornbury Music Festival in Oxfordshire in June.

Clark had joined Dire Straits in 1980 as the band’s keyboards player, taking a significant role in their transformation into one of the world’s biggest rock groups and co-producing the On The Street album. He has played and recorded with Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner and the Bee Gees too.

Palmer joined the Dire Straits line-up for the On Every Street tour and has played with the likes of Clapton, Dylan, Sting, Roger Daltrey, Take That, Wishbone Ash and producer Trevor Horn.
