A rabid bat was found in an Oceana County home in the last couple weeks after the homeowners awoke to find a bat in their bed, according to Dr. James Wilson, medical director for District Health Dept. No. 10.
Wilson said any time a bat is found where people have been sleeping or any time a bat is found around people who cant communicate or are mentally challenged, it is considered an exposure, which warrants testing.
He said a bat in a childs room is always considered an exposure.
The homeowners in Oceana County killed the bat without damaging its head and sent it in for testing. Wilson said when the bat came back positive, the people were put on rabies injections. He said although there are fewer injections in the rabies exposure protocol than there used to be and theres less pain involved, the cost is great, which is why testing is important.
To make sure a bat someone has been exposed to can be tested, great care should be taken in capturing and killing the bat. Wilson said just killing the bat could destroy the head so he suggests trapping the bat on the floor, covering it with a box and asphyxiating it with ether or starting fluid. Other methods of killing bats without harming their head include drowning the animal or crushing its chest. Some wildlife removal people use large pliers to crush the chest cavity of captured bats so they can be tested.
Wilson said its very important to wear gloves when trying to capture and kill a bat. The bats must be killed to be submitted for testing, Wilson said. DHD No. 10 cannot accept live bats.
The Oceana County bat was the third rabid animal in the district this year, counting one in Mecosta and one in Manistee counties.
