The working relationship forged between the local union and plant management has been one of the biggest reasons the site has seen two new engine lines being installed, bringing about $1 billion in new investments to the River Road production center. The Detroit Free Press reported Friday that GM was preparing to offer a new round of buyouts to its older UAW employees. The two sides have had a two-tiered wage system in place for years. It pays newly hired workers considerably less than those who have been with the company. The new hires also received a less generous health insurance plan and are not pension-eligible. Several “launch teams” have been created to solicit the opinions and suggestions of workers who will eventually man the two engine assembly lines. Previously, the installation might only have been overseen by engineers and the process wouldn’t involve those who will eventually be responsible for operating the machinery and making the engines.
