The way things are going these days a lot folks are in need of help year round. The economy doesn’t seem to be moving too fast and recently the talking heads in Washington announced that we might expect recession, part two.
So now we come to the holidays, that cheerful time of the year, when folks who are in need might tend to get a little extra glum because they go without anyhow, and now the pressure is on to get a little more, mostly for the kids.
As always there are a pretty sizable handful of organizations that need your help while they work to help others. And some are saying that perhaps your help is needed more than ever, because things are tighter this year than last.
“With the economy the way it is, more people are coming to us,” says Maj. Sterling Mallard of the local Salvation Army.
Mallard came to the region last June, after Maj. Jim McGee left the area. He says this year, with the economy and the damage from last summer’s Hurricane Irene, it seems assistance needs have grown a bit over last year.
“Since I’ve been here we’ve had the hurricane too and that’s been a bigger need for some of the counties we serve,” he says.
Mallard says Tuesday is the last official day for folks in need to fill out applications for assistance this holiday season. The applications will be taken at the Pasquotank County Social Services office on Roanoke Avenue.
“Don’t wait until the last minute so that we can be prepared,” he says.
So folks who need assistance can sign up for it. But those who are willing and able to provide it, well they have a number of options this year.
“They can send cash donations if they want to,” says Mallard. “They can go by and pick up the angel (from one of many Angel Trees) or drop off unwrapped gifts at the (Salvation Army) office.”
People can also adopt entire families. To do that, drop by the office at 602 N. Hughes Blvd., in Elizabeth City.
