Ivory towers feet of clay
Post-secondary schools play a big role in the thriving downtowns of many North American cities. While that connection has begun in London, with Fanshawe College planning a downtown arts campus, the missing link -- one of Ontario's largest schools -- remains the University of Western Ontario. Harvard of the North.
Fanbelt College.
Times have changed since those nicknames -- one wanted, one not -- were applied to London's post-secondary schools.
Harvard of the North may have seemed within reach of the University of Western Ontario at one time.
With high entrance standards, a sprawling beautiful and ever-expanding campus and renowned research facilities, the school has earned a Top 10 place in annual Canadian rankings.
Yet, it hasn't achieved the international status it has desired. And over the years, what university administrators see as a lofty goal signaled snobbery to many other Londoners. Somehow, at the same time, UWO has gained a reputation for being a party school.
Neither reputation -- too good for many, too loud for others -- has made it friends in London.
Fanshawe College suffers even more than Western a reputation for parties that get out of hand.
Yet, over the years, Fanshawe College has shed its image of being a school of last resort, where people who don't have the academics to get into university go to work with, gasp, their hands.
It may be a generational thing, with the parents of high schoolers are realizing their own BAs have been no guarantee of success or happiness.
Now, the college has taken the brilliant stroke of planning to building its School of Applied and Performance Arts downtown.
City leaders and downtown advocates are calling the college's downtown campus either the last piece of the puzzle in the core or the start of another revitalization.
Either way, Fanshawe appears the favourite child at the moment.
