Local Indian community tripled in 10 years

The force of family that drew Bhupendra Amin to Scranton two decades ago is the same factor propelling the growth of the Indian population in his neighborhood.

Mr. Amin, a maintenance worker at the University of Scranton, immigrated from the state of Gujarat to Prescott Avenue in 1992, following his parents' earlier move to the city, inspired by a nephew before them who had made Scranton home.

There were 10 Indian families in the Midtown Apartments when he moved in about a year later. Now, there are more than 100.

"I'm here. I support people. They come here, they stay here a long time, they will support other people," said Mr. Amin, a board member of the low- to moderate- income housing complex.

"It's like a chain. It's linked."

The growth of the downtown Indian community has mimicked the growth traced in both the city and the county by the recent census.

The number of Indians in Scranton more than tripled in the last decade from 310 to 1,147, according to new census figures. Lackawanna County saw the population grow from 613 to 1,672 during the same period. After Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, Indians are the third-largest new ethnic population in the city.

Some pockets of the county show the highest concentration of Indian residents, including much of the Hill Section and areas of the Abingtons. In the census tract that includes the downtown and Midtown Apartments, Indians make up an eighth of the population.

Although Indians consider their local community cohesive, it is by no means monolithic: some have been in the region for decades and others, like Mr. Amin's brother- and sister-in law, arrived in the past year. Many work in highly skilled fields, like medicine, academia, engineering and technology. Others have found ready employment in the region's warehouses and distribution centers. Newer immigrants are striving to adapt to their new country while second-generation immigrants are working to maintain ties to their ethnic and cultural heritage.
