Ohio Task Force 1 Staged In NY For Irene Relief

The 80-member Ohio Task Force One is in central New York near town of Middleburgh in Schoharie County to conduct search and rescue operations after extreme flooding from Hurricane Irene.

The county is located west of Albany, NY., which is the state's capital.

Ohio Task Force One was deployed from Kettering and sent east on Friday to help aid wherever they told to go. News Center 7's Gabrielle Enright has been traveling with the group since they left.

The search and rescue team will be in Middleburgh, NY, and other surrounding areas conducting primary and secondary searches because of flash flooding that hit the area on Saturday. Enright was told that Task Force One will start its search beginning at first light on Tuesday morning.

Officials said that more than 4.5 million homes and businesses along the coast lost power, and at least 38 deaths were blamed on the storm, Enright said.

With roads impassable because of high water and fallen trees, it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known. As the storm moved into Canada, residents along the East Coast have begun to assess the damaged that was left from the storm.

"I think it's a little strong to say we dodged a bullet. However, it certainly could have turned out worse for the Hampton Roads area" in Virginia, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco.

At the same time, officials warned of extreme flooding as runoff from the storm makes its way into creeks and rivers.

Irene brought six inches to a foot of rain to many places along the East Coast. In one eastern North Carolina neighborhood, two-dozen homes were destroyed by flooding and officials feared more damage could be uncovered there.

Insured damage from Irene will range between $2 billion and $3 billion, and the total losses will likely be about $7 billion, according to preliminary estimates by Kinetic Analysis Corp. a consulting firm.
