Charley Walters: Twins have no more help down on the farm in Rochester
As poorly as the Twins have played this season, their top minor league club, the Rochester Red Wings, has played even worse.
With nine games left entering Saturday's game at Syracuse, Rochester needed five victories to avoid its first back-to-back 90-loss seasons since 1903-04.
The Red Wings are 50-85. Last year, they finished 49-95.
"It's a mess," one baseball insider said. "It's embarrassing."
Some Rochester players are being paid between $12,000 and $15,000 a month. Average home attendance is 6,271.
Meanwhile, the Twins' Class AA New Britain club (67-65) is on the cusp of the Eastern League playoffs.
Dave St. Peter is the Twins' president who oversees the franchise's operation for Jim Pohlad , who represents ownership.
"We've had a tremendous amount of Triple-A players in Minnesota this year," St. Peter said. "We like a lot of players at Double-A. We have a fair number of prospects in the lower minors."
As for improving the major league club, St. Peter said the Twins will assess in-house options, free agency and trades.
"There are a variety of ways to acquire players, and rest assured, we're going to exhaust looking at all three of them," he said.
He said the Twins won't focus on the free-agent market.
"Is that one avenue? Yes," he said. "But our overall payroll (a franchise-record $113 million this season) will be a function of our revenues. Clearly, we're much better positioned today to do what we need to do than we would have been two years ago in the Metrodome.
"One of the lessons for everybody to learn is that payroll in and of itself is not a prerequisite to winning. To be honest, what we need to do is get back to playing our brand of baseball, and ultimately that comes down to players. It doesn't come down to paychecks."
St. Peter said Pohlad is taking this season "in stride. Jim Pohlad is like all of us; he's a fan. He's disappointed in the way we've played.
