Musical theatre stars have song advice for Canada's Susan Boyle hopefuls
TORONTO - Does Canada have its own Susan Boyle? Is there a Paul Potts on the Prairies, perhaps, or a Jackie Evancho on the East Coast?
Judges for "Canada's Got Talent" will be looking for such hidden gems beginning Friday as nation-wide auditions for the Citytv spinoff of the hit franchise begin in Winnipeg.
While the show welcomes entertainers of all kinds â from dancers to illusionists and fire breathers â it's often been the singers who've captured the world's attention on international versions.
But just how does a singer stand out in such a cattle-call casting process, beyond having a heartwarming personal story â like Boyle's "never been kissed" life with her cat Pebbles, or Potts' physical and financial difficulties?
"For me, in the audition, the song that you choose should make you cry. It doesn't matter why, it could be because you're happy, but it gives you that feeling that you're overflowing," says Alice Ripley, Tony Award-winning star of the hit musical "Next to Normal," who confesses to going to "hundreds" of auditions in her career.
"The crucial element is that there's an inexplicable tie from the middle of your chest to the song. ... What you're looking for is that feeling of: 'I can't wait to sing this song because I know that when people hear me sing this song, I love their reaction, I love how it makes me feel, I love how it makes them feel.'"
Ripley's theory is a common one amongst musical theatre stars, who know all too well the pressure of having just a couple of minutes and a few musical bars to try to beat out hundreds of hopefuls for one part.
"You don't go for a particular song, you go for something that you can sing well," says Colm Wilkinson, the Irish-born stage star of musicals including "Les Miserables" and "The Phantom of the Opera."
"Something that would not only probably impress the people you're auditioning for, of course, but at the same time something that you feel comfortable with and something that would show your range and show your emotion off.
