Cult book about world's fattest man to be turned into a film
It follows the life of Malcolm Ede a charismatic and magnetic character who everyone agrees is destined for great things until one day he takes to his bed and refuses to get up.
Narrated by his younger brother, the book, which has sold to 11 countries, details the effect his drastic action has on his family and girlfriend.
The winner of the To Hell With Prize 2010, it has received critical acclaim in both the UK and the United States.
Now, in a deal negotiated by agent Cathryn Summerhayes, it has been optioned by Warp films and Film4 to be turned into a feature film.
The BAFTA-winning production company were behind Four Lions and This Is England, as well as a the recent high-profile adaptation of Joe Dunthorne’s debut novel Submarine earlier this year.
Whitehouse, who is currently working on his second book, said the role of Mal would be very difficult to fill.
"I am over the moon because I have always been a big fan of Warp films but filling the role will be a headache," he said.
"I am big fan of Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Whishaw and so would love it if they got the part."
Sam Lavender, the head of development at Film4, said: "David has written a terrific debut novel, it's insightful and sad and deeply humorous, and it feels a perfect fit for us to be developing it with the team at Warp."
Francis Bickmore, the senior editor at the book publisher Canongate, said: “Bed has been one of the fiction highlights of our year so far.
"The book’s really taken flight, I think partly because despite its unforgettable premise, it’s very universal.
"It is a book about the journey from being under the shadow of one’s family to finding one’s own place in the world. Pretty much everyone can relate to that.
"I couldn’t imagine better partners for this project than the maverick visionaries at Warp and Film4.
