Shopping: Someone has to do it

This Christmas, I'm not going anywhere. In fact, a big red bow wrapped around my couch would be the best present ever. Then again, we are just off the heels of Thanksgiving and, better yet, Black Friday. I've had my fill for at least 360 days of meeting family members' latest new boyfriends, small talk, driving, rushing and even mashed potatoes.

Shopping? Don't get me started. For fear of being trapped between two grown men fist fighting over a towel that costs $1.49, I always avoid Black Friday. Not to mention I can't find one single thing appealing about getting up at 12 a.m. to shop (not even for towels that cost $1.49).

The price of sleep is far too valuable to me. Cyber Monday might have worked nicely, except for the mere fact that Christmas shopping might not be considered an appropriate way to spend my Monday afternoon in the office, especially considering I have no idea what to buy anyone for Christmas, thus a lot of research would be in order.

Every year, my husband suggests we skip out on exchanging gifts, and I'm pretty sure if he were brave enough he'd ask we skip gifts altogether. He says it's about cutting back on spending, but I know the real reason.

Jack hates shopping even more than me. Even with groceries, Jack waits to the point of near starvation before he'll go to the store. I'm more resourceful and pretty good at cleaning out the pantry (and can make it days without going to the store), but Jack, if it's not laid out on the counter, forget it. Eventually, I get tired of him calling me and asking "What can I eat for lunch?" and we'll mope our way to the market.

Now we have a toddler on our hands, so ignoring the gift thing isn't possible. So as content I'd be with a Lonesome Dove marathon and an egg nog cocktail, Santa will be coming to town this year.
