Stellar Fielding, Hitting Lift Bandits To 2d National Fast Pitch Title
Sulphur, LA --- Bandits rookie and leadoff hitter Megan Wiggins turned in an MVP caliber performance Sunday afternoon on ESPN2. Flashy glove work in the field and clutch hitting at the plate propelled the Bandits to a 10-3 victory over the USSSA Florida Pride in the decisive game two victory of the NPF Championship Series.
Wiggins got the offense going immediately for the Bandits, blasting a pitch deep to left centerfield for a lead-off triple in the bottom of the first. One batter later, a fielding error by Pride second baseman Ashley Charters allowed Amber Patton to reach first base and score Wiggins for an early 1-0 lead.
The Bandits kept the pressure going when with one out and the bases loaded, designated player Nikki Nemitz stepped in to face former University of Michigan teammate Jordan Taylor. Nemitz got the better of Taylor, blasting a two run double to the outfield wall for a 3-0 lead with just one out.
An infield single by Shannon Doepking scored Tammy Williams from third base for a 4-0 lead just after the USSSA Pride made a pitching change to bring Sarah Pauly in relief of Jordan Taylor. One batter later, Vicky Galindo got her barrel on the bat, shooting a single up the middle to score Nemitz for the 5-0 lead.
Back in the batters box again after Chicago batted around, Wiggins stepped up with two on and two down to face Pauly with a 5-0 lead. Pauly forced Wiggins into a check-swing pop out for the final out to end the damage.
The resilient Florida Pride got on the bases quickly in the top of the second with two straight walks off Abbott. Catcher Megan Willis dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.
One out later, Pride veteran Natasha Watley opened the scoring, blasting a single up the middle to score two runs for the Pride. Abbott forced a pop fly to end the inning, but the damage was done as the Pride brought the score to 5-2.
With runners on and no outs, the Bandits struck again when a fielding error at first base allowed Stacy May-Johnson to reach base safely, scoring Amber Patton for a 6-2 lead. Nikki Nemitz blasted a hard single to Pride third baseman Andrea Duran. The outstretched Duran could not make the play as Nemitz reached base safely while scoring another run for the 7-2 lead.
